Early Career of Brad Podray
Brad Podray had an ardent desire to become a pianist at the age of 13. He participated in a talent show and won first prize in the youth division, a large pizza from a local shop.
The adult division winner received a cruise for two to an island. When he turned 15, he and his best friend, Dan, recorded an album inspired by NIN’s industrial rock.
They used a 4-track tape recorder to create it and sold 50 copies at a local record store. He felt like a music god.
At 19, he collaborated with a friend he had never met. They communicated on an online forum and produced two albums.
Even though they had made them available for free download, he went to the post office daily to ship CDs.
At the age of 20, he was admitted to the dental school of the University of Pennsylvania.
During this time, he also produced a stop-motion animation video featuring a pirate rapping with Dan, who was mentioned earlier in this story.
The video became quite popular and received 200,000 hits on YouTube within a month, which was considered a respectable number then.
This video paved the way for his unpredictable and wild ride in the nerdcore rap genre, where he became known as a pirate rapper.
At 28 years old, he was accepted into the orthodontic specialty program at Temple University.
At 29, he was part of a parody pirate rap band that received an invitation to perform on America’s Got Talent.
Despite being in his orthodontic residency in Philadelphia, he took a weekend off to participate. However, they were quickly X’ed off the show.
Five years later, at 34, he was living with his current wife in North Hollywood. During this time, they met several filmmakers and music producers.
At 37, he has returned to music with a new project called PØDRAY. He collaborated with a close friend in Culver City to create a music video for their first electronic pop song, UberGrill. This song is the first of a five-track series they will release.
Brad Podray Career
Brad Podray has pursued his career as an orthodontist, musician, comedian, and chef. He has written music for video games, short films, and many others.
His journey in the comedy world began when he teamed up with his childhood best friend to form the pirate rap group Captain Dan & the Scurvy Crew.
After a few years of moderate success with the band, they appeared on America’s Got Talent, which made him question the industry due to the staged and manipulative nature of reality TV.
He later attempted to participate in Masterchef, but failed, which led him to commit to his career in comedy and music fully.
Over the years, he has released approximately 40 albums, and his videos have garnered millions of views.
However, despite gaining a significant following through his parodies, his true passion lies in his Scumbag Dad series.
He has been working on a long narrative for this series, where his scumbag father influences the actions of a once-innocent child.
The creator could not complete the narrative arc he had planned for the Scumbag Dad character as various platforms started banning his content and demonetizing his channels.
Due to frequent bans, he was forced to tone down the series. To avoid having his content removed, he had to make any depiction of blood or violence or any reference to drugs indirect.
He realized that the platforms he had used to gain popularity were no longer willing to support his dark creativity.
The Scumbag Dad series was his most complex series, featuring multiple locations, intricate storylines, and a large cast of actors.
It was also his favorite series, as he relished the opportunity to shoot absurd plots with his friends.
Although Podray still creates Scumbag Dad videos, they no longer form part of a larger narrative in the same way. It is Podray’s passion project, but for now, he has to create simpler content to garner views.
